Mathematics Requirements

The Major In Mathematics

Nine courses in mathematics are required for a major: Mathematics 170 (or its equivalent sequence Mathematics 106-166), 171, 211, 216, 220, and four other courses numbered 210 or above, two of which must be chosen among courses numbered 310-380 or 390-399. Physics 111 and 112 are required of all mathematics majors. Substitutions for this requirement may be made only with the approval of the Mathematics and Computer Sciences Department.

It is recommended that students planning graduate work in mathematics include Mathematics 313, 327, 328, and 329; and that students planning to work in industry include Mathematics 214, 221, 225, 327, and 231. Students interested in actuarial work should include Mathematics 214, 225, 327, 231, and 332. All students are encouraged to complement their studies in mathematics with courses in computer science.

Students planning to teach mathematics in secondary schools must complete nine mathematics courses: Mathematics 170 (or its equivalent sequence Mathematics 106- 166), 171, 211, 216, 220, 313, 231, 340, and one of the following: Mathematics 214, 225, 328, or 329. These students also are required to complete Computer Science 120 and Physics 111 and 112. They also should consult professional requirements for teacher certification under Education.

Students who plan to teach in elementary school must complete nine courses in mathematics, including Mathematics 170 (or its equivalent sequence Mathematics 106-166), 171, 211, 216, 220, and 340. The remaining three courses must have the approval of the Mathematics Department. Such students are required to complete Physics 111 and one other laboratory science course. They also should consult professional requirements for teacher certification under Education.

The Minor In Mathematics

The minor in mathematics consists of five courses in mathematics: Mathematics 170 (or the equivalent sequence 106-166), 171, and three courses numbered 210 or above, including at least one of the following: Mathematics 216, 220, 225, 313, 231, or 340.

The Interdepartmental Major In Mathematics

The six mathematics courses that meet Set I requirements are Mathematics 170 (or its equivalent sequence Mathematics 106-166), 171, 211, and three additional courses chosen by the student with the approval of the advisor. Mathematics courses to be taken to satisfy Set II requirements will be determined by the student.s prior preparation in mathematics and his or her educational objectives.
